A History of Industrial Machine Tools

A History of Industrial Machine Tools and Equipment begins with the Industrial Revolution. Prior to the 17th and 18th centuries, tool and equipment manufacturers relied primarily on woodworking, leather and metalworking skills involving nothing more than human movement and some mechanical ingenuity. The lathe, for instance, is the world's oldest machine tool and dates back to antiquity. It was not, however, until the late 17th Century that clock makers, inventors of scientific devices, furniture manufacturers and gun makers began moving from woodworking lathes to metal lathes. With the Industrial Revolution came the ability to make tools and equipment that were powered by something else than human movement and other natural power sources such as wind, gravity and water. The discovery or invention of new power sources such as electricity, steam, coal and gas gave tool and equipment manufacturers the ability to combine their skills with machines that no one had ever seen before. Not only were the electric, steam and the gasoline engines great tools themselves, they were capable of creating other tools and machines with far greater capabilities and precision. Learn More >>
