JC Whitney - Truck, SUV and VanTruck Accessories for Industrial Trucks

Truck Accessories for the industrial truck might include anything from enhancing the interior or exterior of your welding truck to improving the performance of your transport rig or tanker. Unlike a car, a truck is a motorized vehicle specifically designed for hauling cargo or for some special kind of work, i.e., a welding or logging truck. Trucks are larger and heavier than the average car and are different in construction. While cars have a unibody construction, most trucks are built around a strong frame called a chassis. They also usually have a larger more powerful engine and a much stronger suspension for heavy loads. A truck comes in many different sizes from the pickup truck to towering mining truck or heavy tractor trailer truck. Some of the most popular pickup trucks come from manufacturers such as Ford, Chevy, Dodge and GMC. The much larger transport trucks for logging, mining and general cargo hauling include the Mack, Volvo and the Freightliner. Truck Types
Trucks are often divided into three weight classes:
1. Light Trucks - weigh no more than 6,300 kg (or 13,000 lb) and are used by individuals for commercial duties as a utility vehicle, light hauling and towing. This category includes pick-up trucks, vans and SUVs.
2. Medium Trucks - weigh between 6,300 kg (13,000 LB) and 15,000 kg (33,000 LB) are used for local delivery and public service, i.e. dump and garbage trucks.
3. Heavy Trucks - are the largest truck allowed on the highway. They weigh no less than 15,000 kg (33,000 lbs). They are mostly used for hauling huge loads and long distance hauling using a in semitrailer configuration. Called semis or tractor trailer trucks, they come with multispeed transmissions, with as many as 18 gears for pulling heavy loads. Most have two rear drive axles, called dual tandems, each of which has dual tires on each side. Trucks with this configuration are nicknamed 18-wheelers because of the total number of wheels under the truck and trailer. The largest truck ever built, the Liebherr T 282B mining truck is not only the world's largest earth-hauling truck, it is also the largest diesel-electric truck on two axles and six wheels with an AC electrical system.

Truck Construction
All standard trucks are made with same six components: 1) a chassis, 2) a cab, 3) axles, 4) suspension and 4) wheels, 5) an engine and a 6) drive train. The steel chassis consists of two parallel U-shaped beams held together by crossmembers. It is the main structure of the truck and the other parts attached to it. The cab is where the driver is seated. It sometimes comes with a sleeper which is basically an apartment on wheels. For light to medium sized trucks the engine is usually powered by gasoline, while heavier trucks use a diesel engine. Some heavy duty off road trucks use a type of locomotive engine, i.e., a V12 Detroit Diesel two stroke engine. In North America engines are usually built by third party manufacturing giants such as as CAT, Cummins, or Detroit Diesel. The only exceptions are the Volvo and Mack Trucks, which are available with Volvo and Mack diesel engines, and the Freightliner featuring the Mercedes-Benz and Detroit Diesel engine. The drive train in light trucks is often the same as that of a car. Bigger trucks use manual transmissions, which are built stronger to withstand the torque generated by their engines. Automatic transmissions for heavy trucks are becoming more and more common, due to advances both in transmission and engine power.
