Air Tools for Industrial Applications

Air Tools are those tools and machines that are pneumatic or powered by compressed air. Examples of air tools include everything from grinders, sanders, drills, screwdrivers, tire gauges, ratchet wrenches, hammers, nailers, polishers and saws, to trimmers. When compressed air is released it can be used to push a piston, turn a shaft, or force paint or sand through a nozzle. Compressed air provides an alternative source of power for many industrial tools, such as construction drills and hammers, automotive impact wrenches, and mining rock drills. Not only are air tools often lighter, faster, and more powerful than their electric or gas counterparts, they are an ideal solution for those situations where there are gas leaks and it is too dangerous to use an electric tool, i.e., in an underground mine.

Air Tool Functions
Air Tools are used for a variety of functions. Compressed air motors are widely used in air tools in which intermittent large forces are required, as in jackhammers; in hand tools in which an electric motor would be too large to provide the desired torque, as in the pneumatic wrenches used in garages to tighten or loosen lug nuts on automobile wheels; and in small high-speed rotary systems in which speeds in the 10,000 to 30,000 rpm range are required. Pneumatic power is also used in manufacturing for the sequencing and operating of various automatic machines. An oscillating or rotating motion can be achieved by a crank or ratchet mechanism, although for high-speed rotary motion a vane-type motor is more suitable. This acts like an air turbine, turning the rotor while the air expands, and is used for high-speed drills and grinders and for air sirens. A compressed-air stream can also be used to carry other materials, i.e., paint or sand and spray them through an atomizing nozzle.
